Each author of the 17,819 blogs tagged Linux in Technorati , is probably secretly aspiring to become the next Bloginkton (ending your name in inkton is required to be a heavy-weight blogger). 17,819 sounds like an incredible source of diversity … in theory.
In fact, when Linux bloggers scout SourceForge and Freshmeat bulletin boards, when they scrutinize Slashdot, Linux.com, NewsForge or even ThinkGeek, they are really looking at one source only: SourceForge Inc., NASDAQ: LNUX (apparently Linus Torvalds doesn’t care about defending his trademark
When they feed on c|net, TechRepublic, News.com, ZDNet or even BNet, they are really reading from one source only CNET, NASDAQ: CNET (Factoid: Fox co-founder Kevin Windle helped jump start CNET TV and later on became president of CNET Networks ).
Want to publish or advertise? Here again a binary choice: Google runs Adsense, Doubleclick and Feedburner while Yahoo runs delicious, Overture and a few others. Oh and yeah, rumor has it Google is looking at Digg…
Let me summarize: 17,000 Linux bloggers, 2 main information sources, 2 revenue choices.
